Article 1, section 2, clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution limits the number of Representatives at...?

... no more than one for every 30,000 Americans.

Calculated with today's population, the Constitution would allow for up to 10,000 Representatives.

That being the case, why do we only have 435?

Why don't we have 10,000 Representatives, or 5,000, or 1,000, or at least some number closer to 10,000 than 435?

"...The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct. The Number of Representatives shall not exceed one for every thirty Thousand, but each State shall have at Least one Representative; and until such enumeration shall be made, the State of New Hampshire shall be entitled to chuse [sic] three, Massachusetts eight, Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations one, Connecticut five, New-York six, New Jersey four, Pennsylvania eight, Delaware one, Maryland six, Virginia ten, North Carolina five, South Carolina five, and Georgia three."

It's easier to control mid-level government if there's not too many of them. 10,000 of them might actually end up with a few representing public interest and not towing the company line!
The answer is simple, 435 people are easier to coordinate and organize than 10,000... while for us, organizing 700,000 people is impossible next to organizing 30,000. It gives them the power over us, and there was never a constitutional amendment to change Article 1 Section 2, making this illegal.

It says no MORE then 1/30,000. They have the power to determine the number by proportion, but can not exceed that number. It can be less.
Look at the text. It says no MORE than one for every 30,000. If we only had one person in the House, it would still be Constitutional.
they didnt want to deal with more people in the capitol. it sounds trivial but its kinda true.
"Not exceed..." means it can be less. Back then, 30,000 was a lot of people.
