Be able to differentiate the regions of South America: The North, the West, the Southern Cone and Brazil.

Be sure to review what we covered in the specific countries of each region. If someone answers the questions for my study guide, ill love you forever lol?
You could google pretty much all of this and quickly get your answers, instead of having someone on the internet do all your homework for you. I don't mean this to be mean or disrespectful, but it would also probably be a lot faster than waiting for someone else to look all of this up for you, and its very likely that no one is going to.

The feeling in the South is one of deep resentment over losing the Civil War. In most places, you will hear them refer to it as the "War of Northern Agression" or some such. You'll find lots of bumper stickers of the Confederate flag, which is a direct result of the South forming its own country when they seceeded from the union.(It still flies high over Georgia, which was the seat of the Confederate government, I believe) In the news today you will occasionally her someplace like Kentucky, apologizing for its part in black slavery. But for the most part the South is still convinced they were personally cheated.
Your implication is that everyone in the south are ignorant rednecks, but the opposite seems to be the case. You apparently are a "northerner" as you would probably say are the ignorant one for asking this question and making the assertions that accompany it.... American History Essay Question..?

I have notes on this question, but my notes aren't enough to cover 4 pages. Maybe they are, but I have a hard time expanding on things when it comes to History.

    The essay question is:

After 1800 the northern and southern states began to look markedly different both socially and economically. Discuss the economies of both regions after and the social structures that developed during this time period. Why do you think the north and south had different economic and social development and how did these social structures help determine the outcome of the Civil War??

I know that during that time period the north had a grand majority of the railroads, and they also became industrialized, their artisan ways were moving westward. The south was mostly filled with plantations, which supplied cotton (of course).

That about sums up one and a half pages that I already have written.

Please help!! :]American History Essay Question..?
the south relied so much on slavery for its economy and the north was industrialized and not reliant on slave labor which is why they succeeded and fought so passionately and hard even though the north had too much of an advantage over the south (although it needed a good general and the south did although they didn't have enough weapons or acces to railroads to transport stuff to the soldiers which is a crucial idea as to the north's superiority)

Is there an Islamic anti-slavery movement?

This year is the 200th anniversary of the abolishment of slavery bythe British. Before it was abolished, white Christians from Britain used to go to Africa and take slaves to work plantations in the Caribbean. The Church of England even had a seminary in Jamaica supported by slave labour. However, Christians have since come to the view that slavery and racism are wrong and sinful.

On the other hand, Arab Muslims in North Africa are still enslaving black Africans, in places like Sudan and Mauritania, and there seem to be Muslims arguing that it is right to enslave "kaffirs". The South Arican word "kaffer", used as a term for blacks, came from the Arabic. Is there any Muslim anti-slavery movement to oppose this? What is the islamic teaching about slavery and how to treat kaffirs? Is there an Islamic anti-slavery movement?
While slavery is not directly prohibited in the Quran, it is shown that slaves must be freed. Thus, this means that there are not supposed to be any slaves.

This was promoted by the following ways:

1.(1) Encouraging the masters and the Muslim societies at large to help in freeing the slaves. The act of freeing the slave is considered a noble one which is highly valued by God. The slaves themselves entered into an agreement with the master to buy their independence by paying certain amounts of money. The society was encouraged to help in providing the freedom money.

    (2) Making the act of freeing the slave a part of punishment for any criminal act as well as for non-conformity of the Islamic rituals. There are several verses in the Holy Quran which specifically mentioned the requirement of freeing the slave as a way of meeting the punishment for wrongdoing. See 4:92, 5:89 and 58:3

    (3) Using Charity money as a financial source to free the slave.

Now let us look at verses in the Quran that deals with slavery:

[9:60] Charities shall go to the poor, the needy, the workers who collect them, the new converts, to free the slaves, to those burdened by sudden expenses, in the cause of GOD, and to the traveling alien. Such is GOD's commandment. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.

[90:10-13] Did we not show him the two paths? He should choose the difficult path. Which one is the difficult path? The freeing of slaves.

For your quesition about kaffirs. I found a good article that every Muslim should read. It deals briefly with the term "kaffir"

"This issue of 鈥榢affir鈥?is controversial and needs to be clarified. Kaffir comes from the root word kufr, which means to cover up. Therefore, a kaffir can be best translated as a truth-concealer. However, in legal terms, a kaffir is indeed someone who does not believe in both parts of the Shahadah, so even while all non-Muslims are legally kaffirs, does that warrant the use of the word in such a harsh, condescending tone. Is this how our prophet and his companions used the word kaffir? Aren鈥檛 these 鈥榢affirs鈥?also human beings? Didn鈥檛 the prophet stand up out of respect to a passing funeral procession of a Jewish man."

    What is Islam

The word "Islam" is an Arabic word which means "submission to the will of God "Allah - SWT". This word comes from the same root as the Arabic word "salam", which means "peace". As such, the religion of Islam teaches that in order to achieve true peace of mind and surety of heart, one must submit to Allah (SWT) and live according to His Divinely revealed Law. The most important truth that Allah (SWT) revealed to mankind is that there is nothing divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Almighty Allah (SWT), thus all human beings should submit to Him. The word "Muslim" means one who submits to the will of Allah (SWT), regardless of their race, nationality or ethnic background.

Being a Muslim entails willful submission and active obedience to Allah (SWT), and living in accordance with His message. Some people mistakenly believe that Islam is just a religion for Arabs, but nothing could be further from the truth. Not only are there converts to Islam in every corner of the world, especially in England and America, but by taking a look at the Muslim World from Bosnia to Nigeria, and from Indonesia to Morocco, one can clearly see that Muslims come from many various races, ethnic groups and nationalities. It is also interesting to note that in actuality, more than 80% of all Muslims are not Arabs - there are more Muslims in Indonesia than in the whole Arab World! So though even though it is true that most Arabs are Muslims, the large majority of Muslims are not Arabs. However, anyone who submits completely to Allah (SWT) and worships Him alone is a Muslim. Is there an Islamic anti-slavery movement?

I have a domestic helper at home, are they considered slave?!

It's year 2007, slave latest designation is called servant, domestic helps, butler, cooks, chauffer, gardener, bodyguards etc etc.......and practically busy people like me do need one at some point of life.

I do not know about all these South African slave but if they are just like the above well I guest nothing wrong with that unless they are tortured than I am against 100%.
What a load of rubbish !!!!!

Kaffir simply means non believer it is not a derogatory term. There are millions of black Muslim brothers and sisters out there they are my family and racism is most definitely NOT part of the Islamic faith. We are of all colours, all nationalities, all races. Nice try but, seriously come on! Try writing something that is factual why dont you........

P.S. North African Muslims are not Arabs.

There are many black Muslims not only in Africa but all over the world. My husband is North African, Algerian in fact and there is no such thing as slavery in North Africa. Come on. My husband has never seen a "slave" in his life. I have been to Tunisia (north Africa also) and guess what no slaves there either.

Just because others misinterpret a word "kaffir" does not mean that "there" definition is a true one. My mother and father are both white and blue eyed and are both Kaffir's because it simply means NON BELIEVER! There is no shame in being a kaffir it is a fact not a derogatory term, once and for all let that penetrate your brain.
Well Punter spewed his Muslim propaganda and STILL didn't answer your question. Are you surprised? I'm not.

I would like to know the answer to this question too. From what little I know about the Qu'ran it says to treat your slaves kindly so, that tells me that NO, there isn't an anti-slavery movement with in the Muslim world.

Maybe an honest Muslim will address the question at hand without spewing to much of their Islamic dogma. One can only hope!
i never heard of these claims. any evidence to support your claim?
Ive checked your links and I must say that the biggest reason why slaves are taken by muslim in africa isnt because theyre not muslim.

Its because theyre at a war with each other.

As it is, the two sides who are at war, either militia, or the government, will always justify their actions and say things like: were better than you are because so and so.

Slavery is not a common thing in Islamic countries and thus there are no anti-slavery movements.

The ones in Africa are a bit different tho. These are cultural differences.

Everyone knows that the slaves who were sold to Europeans were sold by the parents or the family of the slaves themselves for money.

For a people to do this, their culture must permit it to some extent.

Ive never seen anyone selling their kids for slavery for a while now.

    * * *

Ive also lived in Saudi Arabia for a good 20 years. And I can say that Ive seen a lot of African people who come there and work in harsh conditions. They chose to do that for the money. They dont mind if they sell themselves to do it. They are apart of the large beggar community and contribute to it by cutting off parts of their limbs so they can get attention and sympathy.
Kaffir means unbeliever, not a black. Where did u learn that. Whoever claims that are tells u that is wrong or lying.

It would be long if I write it down here, so here's the link. U would find ur explanation. This site makes some comparisons with Christianity as well. Scroll down a little, alright.

    http://www.answering-christianity.com/ac鈥?/a>
    yes
    yes its
I live in the middle east, and have not met one single person, or family, that has slaves. Slavery has pretty much (though maybe not completely) been abolished in the Muslim lands due to the 'rewards' of freeing slaves -as mentioned in the Qur'an and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad. So, perhaps these sources serve as the Islamic anti-slavery movement!

I have heard of slavery in Arican countries, but I don't think that this is due to religious reasons. I think it is cultural.

I believe Briar Rose's answer gives a very precise answer.

  • Any ideas on how i can change this to make it better?

Many of you may not have heard of Harriet Tubman but she played a vital role in history and here鈥檚 why. She was born into slavery in about 1820 with the name of Araminta but she later changed it to Harriet. She had a very tough childhood; she was beaten and received a fractured skull as a result from protecting a fellow slave.

Still, Harriet maintained her strong spirit. She was desperate to be free from slavery and was determined to escape for good. Eventually, Harriet did manage to escape and even though her brothers were frightened and immediately returned to the sugar plantations, she carried on nevertheless. She followed the North Star to get to her freedom, and when she finally arrived she went back straightaway to rescue her family along with 300 other slaves.

Harriet managed to change at least 300 lives of slaves who would never have experienced freedom if it wasn鈥檛 for Harriet. Everyone was very grateful and she was known as the 鈥楳oses of her people鈥?because her actions were just like his.

In helping slaves find freedom it showed that all people had the right to freedom and that the abolition of slavery was only fair.

You may not have known who Harriet Tubman was and what she did for slaves, but you cannot argue that what she did during her time was an achievement not only for her, as a woman, but for everyone. Would you risk your own life for the life of others?

thanks xoxoAny ideas on how i can change this to make it better?

AP US HIstory HELPP??? I"LL PICK the best for points?

France's interior empire in North America:?

    A. was composed of large tobacco plantations.

    B. created an ineffective shield against British expansion.

    C. had many settlements that were mixed-race communities.

    D. stressed farming more than trading, missionizing, or military efforts.

    E. contained no African slaves

2.there were was no North American parallel to the massive slave uprising of the caribbean or south America because in North America?

    A) slaves rarely out numbered whites in any area

    B) slaves were more civilized and educated

    C) slave rebellions were peacefully and amicably resolved

D)master was kinder to their slaves

    E) there no place for fugitive slaves to escapeAP US HIstory HELPP??? I"LL PICK the best for points?
    1) b the french mostly traded and had isolated settlements (with the exception of the one major port, new orleans)

    2) a In haiti, for instance, there were many more slaves than white owners. In north america, however, there were whole white armies.
    B. Created an ineffective shield against British expansion.

The French didn't have tobacco plantations since those those thrived well in the modern-day Southern US areas. The French were also big on trading and that's how their colonies thrived. The French and Indian War with Britain led to the end of French presence in North America

    E. There was no place for fugitive slaves to escape.

In North America, fugitive slaves fled North to freedom, where they weren't forced to work on plantations. Masters weren't kind to their slaves in either region. Actually, the Barbados slave code (one of the most brutal slave codes in History) was adapted by Southern colonies like the Carolinas.AP US HIstory HELPP??? I"LL PICK the best for points?
    C. The French fur traders often intermarried with Native Americans creating the Metis people. I wouldn't say b just because French Louisiana did contain the British colonies. They only took it through war. The British though seemed largely uninterested in interior North America and didn't want too much confrontation with Native Americans as evidenced in the Proclamation of 1763. Overall I would rate it a poor question.

    2. A, I believe South Carolina was the state with the highest proportion of slaves and I think that was only around 50%. Contrast that with Haiti which I think pushed 90%.
The first is B. Sadly, (haha I love France! Such a magnificent country!) after the french and indian war (that war pisses me off grr!) They lost almost all of their land. It's sad, because France has always been a very culturally rich place, with lots of focus on the arts, too!

The second one is A. There were huge amounts of slaves in the carribean and south america. I say, good for them! Slavery is such a sick and disgusting thing. Just like racism is. There were hardly ever times when slaves out numbered whites. Luckily, after the civil war, slavery was (FINALLY!) abolished. Far too long people had slaves. Its so sad :'(

  • What was the best era for the United States?

Our country is not looking so great now, but in retrospect, when was it's best/worst point?

In the early days (1776-1830) the US was just getting started and fine tuning issues with the Constitution. Also, there was the issue with encroaching upon Indian territory.

Then came the Pre-Civil War days (1831-1860). Our country was falling apart because of the difference of ecomomies in the north and south. The north was mostly cities; the south was plantations and small farms.

Civil War and Reconstruction (1861-1875). This is pretty self explanatory. The US was so divided that we had a Civil War.

The Guilded age (1876-1899). Many people moved west. Also, railroads were built.

Industrial Revolution (1900-1913). The turn of the century was a time for industrial prosperity. This gave rise to robber barons such as Rockefeller, Carnegie, and JP Morgan.

World War I (1914-1919). The US did not enter until later, but nonetheless contributed to the Treaty of Versailles, which set the framework for WWII.

The Roaring '20s (1920-1929). The economy boomed.

The Great Depression (1930-1940). The economy collapsed under Hoover. Roosevelt tried to save the US with the New Deal.

World War II (1941-1945). US wanted to stay out of the war, but was forced to when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Brought the US out of the Great Depression due to the rapidly increasing need for military supplies.

I'm going to stop there because most people are pretty familiar with the recent history. You don't necessarily need to pick one of my groups. What was the best era for the United States?
The Clinton years were good, remember when America's biggest problem was a stain on a blue dress?
Also , the 50's were good because the wealthy were paying 90% taxes.
Best era for USA is when it didn't exist!!!!!!!

The land of America is made upon the lives of 120 million native Amerians!!!!!!

    No compensation for these natives!!!

Most of them living in poverty!!!

    taken their land for FREE

And today America calls itself the

    Land of the FREE

Land of the free my ***!!!!!!

Put the world in it's place, before it puts you in yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!What was the best era for the United States?
I would guess 1700-1850 because of the westward expansion.
    The 50's. Very prosperous.
Right now, these are the good 'ole days.
    The 90's for sure.
After WW2. The 50s were great.
what makes you think our best days are not ahead?
I'd say the 50's. Why ? it was before the loser hippie generation screwed the country with thier "question authority" mentality. We gained a whole lot of bad bahaviour from those pathetic losers whom only seemed to care more about thier "motto's", drugs and getting what they wanted than actually rallying together for the good of the nation.

It was also still booming from the residual effects after WW2. Not having started into the Vietnam war yet.......sure, there was the Korean war......but few seem to know much about that these days.

I say that because the old pioneer days were a hard life, most other era's during wars were also hard due to the war efforts. But anything sooner than the mid 60's introduced a rebellion of losers in America that we still suffer with today..........the mindset of entitlements, laziness, selfish persuits that harm the country.

Mid 50's was an era that was free of alot of that crap and still innocent enough that people in general had a good life.

    American History!!!!!?

Slaves were used on plantations in what region of North America?

    A) New England Colonies

    B) Southern Colonies

    C) Appalachian Colonies

    D) Great Lakes ColoniesAmerican History!!!!!?
the southern colonies, plantations were use to produce cotton, tabacco ect so located in south
The slaves in the North were not used on Plantations because they did not have plantations in the North. This is a trick question in as much as it is an attempt to make you believe that the North did not have slavery, (which of course they did).

The first colony to have slaves was Mass. during the earlier part of their history. They don't like to admit it so the History books always say that the first African slaves landed in Jamestown Virginia.

This of course is true because the slaves in Mass. were Indians. They didn't work out too well. They could escape into the woods too easily.

Just another clever way the history books lie.American History!!!!!?
