Geography: Comparing the North and South



The American Civil War was fought from 1861-1865. According to dictionary.com, civil war means 鈥渁 war between political factions or regions within the same country鈥? however, the American Civil War was a war between the South and the North. There was sectional tension between the North and the South, which caused the war over slavery and states鈥?rights. The warm climate helped the South鈥檚 management of resources flourish because its temperature and location was essential for agriculture, so slavery was necessary there, unlike in the northern states, along the Atlantic Ocean, whose cold climate was ideal for manufacturing.

The North and South鈥檚 climate and geography were beneficial to their economy and their economy determined their perspective on slavery. The southern states were warm and sunny: had hot humid summers, mild winters, heavy winters; fertile soil and slow moving rivers. This climate was ideal for agriculture differing from the North鈥檚 climate. The North had warm humid summers, cold winters; farming was not optional because they had rocky hilly land and fast rivers. The South grew many crops: tobacco, rice, sugar cane, and indigo that were sold for profit. These goods were, grown on plantations, cared for by slaves then exported. The crop that was in high demand at the time in the south was cotton. Cotton was originally picked by hand but eventually the cotton gin, a machine that removed the seed from the cotton quicker than by hand, so the demand for cotton grew more aggressively. As cotton became an increasing American export so did the slaves needed for the labor that came with growing cotton. The Southerners were against taxes because they thought it would scare away business. With the North being along the Atlantic Coast it provided a major source of transportation for trade. The south had plantations and farms unlike the North which had cities, the center of trade and manufacturing. The North had a variety of manufacturing companies that made diverse products. The Northerners used canals in the Atlantic Ocean and railroads to transport goods to foreign areas and charged taxes to the goods they exported and imported.

The warm climate helped the South鈥檚 economy because its temperature and location was good for agriculture and they needed slaves to grow the crops, unlike in the North because it was along the Atlantic Ocean, whose cold climate was ideal for manufacturing. The South鈥檚 temperature was ideal for its鈥?agriculture and the slaves did all the agricultural labor that boasted the South鈥檚 economy. The North鈥檚 geographical location and physical conditions were essential for manufacturing and trading boasting its鈥?economy. The South and the North wanted to make rights that effected their own areas. Many of the Southern slave states declared secession from the North and formed the confederacy. The North forced the end of the confederacy and the end of slavery, the North won the war, and the end of the war began the reconstruction ere. With the differences between the North and South war was not the answer, killing many soldiers, they could have approached the reconstruction ere in a more fair, peaceful, and realistic manner.Are the commas, semicolons, and apostrophes placed correctly in this paper?
