1. The answer is B. The "radical" republicans wanted to be harsh on the south, when the politically weak (and southern democrat) Andrew Johnson wanted to continue Lincoln's ideas of "malice towards none." This act was designed to help control and put Johnson in his place. It even lead to an impeachment trial when he broke this act.



2. The answer is C. They wanted the South to renew itself. They wanted to use the tools that lead the Northern economy to victory. They wanted the railroads and factories as well as the farmland.



3. The answer is A. It split the confederacy down the Mississippi River, since whoever held Vicksberg had control of who passes through the Mississippi River. General Grant lead the fairly long campaign to take control of it.
