Morgan fully expounds his view on why the employment of slavery has brought freedom to the white people, and how the “Americans bought their independence with slave labor,” as Morgan puts it. He well explains the social and economical background of colonial America and relates them to the development of slavery and eventually the development of freedom. According to Morgan, slavery has naturally come to North America because of America’s economy and instable society. Colonies such as Virginia were agricultural. Staple crops such as tobacco and indigo were the main exports, and they were planted in large numbers through a method called “plantation.” Plantation required a lot of labor force, so the colonists started hiring indentured servants, who served landowners for a certain amount of period. These indentured servants were mainly young, white men from the Old World who were seeking for a new opportunity in the New World. They usually worked for four or more years for the payment of their passage to the New World. However, as their hopes for acquiring land and women were perished, the indentured servants grew rebellious. In Bacon’s rebellion, approximately a 1000 people gathered to rebel against Governor Berkeley for his friendly tactics towards the native Indians. Landowners became anxious of their white, rebellious servants, so they turned their eyes to the cheap, black slaves from Africa. The English colonists had no intention of using the slaves to extend their rights. Although the cheap labor of Black slaves was a benefit economically, it also served to solve some of the social problems of colonial America. As more and more black slaves from Africa were imported, the numbers of indentured servants declined gradually. Thus, freedmen had more opportunity in finding a place in society, and there weren’t as many rebellious men in the colony as before. The division between the large and small landowners began to shorten, and the English colonists were more closely knitted than before as the number of black slaves increased exponentially. The government started having close relationships with the yeomen, and the yeomen farmers actually began having an influence to the government. The English colonists in Virginia developed the ideas of freedom, liberty, independence, etc. as they were more united than every before. They shared common ground in contemplating that the rights of the black slaves should be deprived and the rights of Englishmen should be claimed. The English colonists unconsciously used slavery as a means of a stepping stone towards the freedom and liberty of white men. Morgan has obviously done a marvelous job in relating the social and economical backgrounds of colonial America to the development of slavery and freedom.Question on US History??????????
Firstly, break it up into more than one paragraph.
Secondly, don't ramble so much.
Thirdly DO NOT copy directly from the text, as you appear to have done.
Decide what the point or points you want to make are, then use the text to back them up -there's plenty of info there for you to work with.
