A- keep in mind, im 16. its not perfect.
B-its for ap us history tho, not regular
C- the question is "why was slavery the principle cause of the civil war" plz dont debate tht it isnt.
Anyways, its about : the opinions of southerners and northerners differed greatly on its legality, morality and the purpose of slavery
"Slavery in the United States first began in Virginia in 1619; however, by the end of the American Revolution, most of the Northern states opposed this institution while it continued to grow in the plantation economy of the South. The North believed that slavery was, indeed, morally wrong and therefore, believed it shouldn鈥檛 be allowed. This is where abolitionists attempted to spread the word on how evil slavery truly was. On the other hand, the North also disapproved slavery for political and economical purposes. They had an interest in limiting the spread of slavery to control Southern political power. In this sense, they could control what happens in the Union. In addition, they also wanted to have a better economy than the South鈥檚 plantation economy. With less slave states meant more free industrial states for the North. The South opposed the North, for they recognized if they lost their slaves, their economic system would collapse. This is due to the fact they would have to pay white workers instead of have the slave鈥檚 free labor. Basically, the South believed slaves weren鈥檛 there to be cruel to them, but in order to produce wealth for individuals and for society in the South. In fact, most Southerners did not own any slaves but they acknowledged that slaves were important to keep cotton, indigo, tobacco, and rice industries in the South. The South couldn鈥檛 comprehend why the North disapproved of slavery so greatly. The North couldn鈥檛 understand why the South couldn鈥檛 keep their morals right and free the slaves. Slavery assisted to spread the beliefs of the North and the South to where their opinions got in the way of keeping a united Union. "
