the Brits had the 13 colonies, the French had canada (quebec) in the north and Louisiana in the south - linked along the Mississippi river. the idea being that since the brits could not be pushed out from the coast, they could at least be isolated there



then came the Battle on the Plains of Abraham- and the Brits conquered Quebec- and opened a road for expansion west. the french lost interest in the "containment idea, and after the US was formed it ended with Napoleon selling louisiana (and mississippi) to the US
