My mom is a security guard at Albemarle Plantation in Southern Perquimans County in the eastern portion of NC. She recently saw a cat during the night patrol and it was about the size of the average dog. It had tan-brownish fur. It had a long tail and it is NOT a Lynx or Bobcat (we already checked and it doesn't match her view of it). Please help soon people! Thank You!North Carolina Wildlife!?
very well could have been a cougar(mountain lion). People have been seeing them all over the east coast for years. The government refuses to accept that though. The same thing was happening here in the midwest.
But people finally gathered evidence too prove that they are repopulating the area.
I would say w/o a doubt it was a cougar. Judging by the given info.North Carolina Wildlife!?
I would have to say a Cougar, whats stopping them from migrating back to parts of the states where they are supposed to of been wiped out.
The only other thing it could be is a non native species let loose or escaped.
Here in England reports of non native cats are everywhere, Lynx, Caracal and Ocelots have been shot in Britain, In the states you have even a bigger history of importing exotic animals just like here in Britain.
May I just say also consider it was dark sometimes its hard to gage the size of an animal or species, is she sure it was not a dog.
But also remind her, that cats are territorial and normally patrol like she does the same area, so she should take care, most of the time cougars will not hunt humans, but in the past weak injured animals have or lack of natural food, they will take domestic pets also and if its in the suburbs they lose their fear of humans
