Prompt: Should people take more responsibility for solving problems that affect their communities or the nation in general?
In a nation like America where there are numerous people from different backgrounds, religions and ethnicity's it is of the utmost importance to stress the need for addressing the nation as a whole. if our nation depended on small community groups for survival, the United States would never be the strong and powerful country it is today. In that sense, taking responsibility for our nation is much more vital to survival than it is for our separate communities.
When we focus on individuals, we tend to lose the big picture. Like wise when we treat groups and faction of the same nation, as separate entities, we don't achieve as much as would achieve together. one great example of the power of nationalism over individualism is shown in the civil war. when the south wanted to succeed, abraham lincoln argued to stand together. he saw that the growing changes between the south and the north only made people worry about their small communities and their factions. lincoln argued that while we might not all be slave holders, or abolitionists, northerners or southerners, plantation farmers, or factory workers, we were all american and that's what counted.
secondly, a nations should be placed above all separate groups and parties because it guarantees the unity of the country, for example, in the early 1500's when the african slave trade was just beginning, factions within africa eventually led to the downfall of the african nation. africa then was actually not a groups of the same people; Africans saw themselves as different, divided. some africans were Hutu, others were from different tribes. but in the end it was the africans themselves that sold each other into slavery. their lack of nationalism, and their emphasis on the community led to their downfall. they worked against each other instead of with each other, until nothing was left, and the slave trade began.
In conclusion, a nation is always more important than select communities. at the end of the day, not all of us are new yorkers, rhode islanders, california natives, or texans. heck, we aren't all catholics, or Protestants. and we definitely aren't all whites, asians, indians or africans. however, at the end of the day, we are always americans. and as we are all americans, our nation brings us the unity we need to be a strong and powerful country. What SAT score would this essay get?
