Were did freed slave live when left the plantations and moved to the north?

For a project 8im doing in class i have to be a freed slave who moved to the north but i have no clue were slaves worked, and lived after they were freed. just one problem it has to be before the civil war. Oh.. i also need a name of a slave who was freed and moved to the north before the civil war.
